Signs Your Teen or Young Adult Might Be Struggling With Addiction
It is not always obvious when normal teenage moodiness or young adult independence tips into something that needs attention. Parents often tell us they knew something was off long before they could name it. Trusting that instinct, and knowing what to actually look for, can make the difference between catching a problem early and watching it get worse.
Behavioral Changes Worth Noticing
Watch for withdrawal from friends and activities they used to care about, a drop in school or work performance, sudden defensiveness about their phone or whereabouts, and sleep or eating patterns that have shifted noticeably. Money going missing, new friend groups that feel secretive, or a general sense that your child has become harder to read are all worth paying attention to, especially when several of these show up together.

What to Do With What You Notice
If you are noticing several of these signs, you do not need to have all the answers before you say something. A simple, non-confrontational conversation is often the best first step. If you are unsure whether what you are seeing is cause for concern, our gambling self-assessment and alcohol self-assessment can offer a starting point, and we are always available to talk through what you are noticing.
